The National Liberal Club (NLC) is a private members’ club located in the heart of Whitehall. Founded in 1882 by Liberal Prime Minister William Gladstone, the Club was created to be a place of socialising, political discussion and campaigning for the Liberal Party membership.
The National Liberal Club of today continues this tradition and is still a home-from-home for Liberals and Liberal Democrat Members. We strongly encourage Liberal Democrat Members to continue our historical tradition and to join our political community and strengthen our collective effort to advance global liberal values. Find out more below about the Lib Dems’ ties to the National Liberal Club.

We are honoured to welcome 40 Lib Dem MPs as new NLC Members. We regularly host talks and socialising events with Lib Dem MPs across a wide range of subjects around contemporary and Party politics.
The NLC is a beautiful building with a friendly atmosphere in the heart of London, perfectly positioned to bring together those of us who wish to cogitate, debate, and advance liberal values. Do join and get involved.
I have been a member of the Club together with my husband William and we can strongly recommend joining the fun and diverse membership. We love the friendly atmosphere in the grand surroundings, the excellent food and drink and the interesting programme which the Club is offering. It’s great for booking your own private events too or treating friends and family.
Having been a Club Member myself for many years, I have enjoyed the full range of political and social events. So, I encourage you to join up and join in – let’s keep the
NLC at the heart of liberal thinking in the modern world.

Walking through the NLC you are taken on a tour of portraits of some of the greatest names in our political history from past and present, including Founder William Gladstone, David Lloyd George, Paddy Ashdown, Charles Kennedy, amongst many others.
We are inviting Lib Dem Members to join our political membership. Book a free tour of the Club today and discover why the NLC is your home away from home.

The Orpington Circle at the National Liberal Club was setup to raise funds for Lib Dem by-election candidates. Throughout the year they hold talks and with Lib Dem MPs. These events are open to all Lib Dem Party members, and they welcome people from across the Party to join them and meet, network, and socialise with fellow members in the exquisite surroundings of the NLC.
The Political and Economic Circle provides a forum for Members to engage with current political and economic issues through talks, debates, and discussions. It aims to encourage informed dialogue, and hosts regular events featuring speakers from across the political spectrum, fostering open conversation and critical thinking within the Club’s community.
Europe Day at the National Liberal Club is an annual flagship celebration of the European Union and our continuing pursuit of EU membership. Organised in partnership with the European Movement UK, the event brings together over 300 attendees, including politicians, diplomats, and pro-Europeans from across the UK and Europe.
Some of our NLC Events are open for general public guests to join. Sign up to our NLC Newsletter to receive updates on upcoming events you can attend, as well as our membership opportunities.
