Women’s Network & P & E Circle Talk & Supper with Lt Gen David Leakey

The NLC Women’s Network and Political and Economic Circle invites all members and guests to a talk, or talk and dinner, entitled “Behind the scenes in the Palace of Westminster: an insider’s View ” by  Lt Gen David Leakey CMG CVO CBE, Black Rod 2011-2018, who will offer an insight to the role of Black Rod, which is rather more than just the ceremonial role at the State Opening of Parliament and banging on the door to summon the House of Commons to the House of Lords. He will also unwrap some of the goings-on behind the scenes in the Parliamentary corridors, discuss the issue of integrity and leadership amongst the political class, and touch on the Queen’s position; laced with anecdotes (or evidence!).

David comes from a distinguished military family with two Victoria Crosses and had an exciting and illustrious military career himself after reading law at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Following 45 years of public service, he is now employed as a strategic advisor in the commercial sector and has a pro bono portfolio in education, charity, music and sport.

The talk will be a hybrid event. All members – men and women – and their guests are welcome to join to to hear the fascinating tale of life as Black Rod, with the option of joining David Leakey for discussion over supper in the dining room or joining us on Zoom by clicking the link below.
