International Women’s Week 2022 – A Concert with a Difference: Lecture-Recital

“Das Jahr” – a cycle of 12 character pieces for piano by Fanny Mendelssohn

Composed in 1841 as a sort of musical diary of her Italian tour of 1839-40, each piece describing an experience from each month. It is an unusual concept, not often encountered, and the style shows that she was both a gifted pianist and a great composer. Raised in an enlightened family, she enjoyed an education equal to that of her younger brother Felix, yet like so many 19th-century female composers, she was never given full recognition in her lifetime for her achievements.

The cycle will be played by NLC Artist in Residence Hannah-Elizabeth Teoh on the Club’s Steinway, with commentary by former NLC chair Janet Berridge.
