Authors’ Club Lunch with Nick Harkaway- BOOKINGS NOW CLOSED
12:30 pm - 3:00 pm
We are delighted to welcome Nick Harkaway to our March lunch to discuss his father John Le Carré’s final novel Silverview.
In this last complete masterwork from the greatest chronicler of our age, Julian, a burnt-out City high-flyer, retreats to an East Anglian seaside town to set up a bookshop. Soon, however, a mysterious visitor draws him into a web of intrigue leading back to the Bosnian war of the 1990s in a tense encounter between innocence and experience, public duty and private morals.
Le Carré began the novel in 2013, revisiting it repeatedly as he published other work. After his death in December 2020, his son Nick Harkaway – whom he had asked to complete any unfinished works – realised that this unpublished work remained, concluding that is was not so much ‘incomplete’ as ‘withheld’. Published in 2021 with an afterword by Harkaway, Silverview is superb novel, in turns an espionage thriller, political rumination and unflinching self-examination, which asks what you owe to your country when you no longer recognize it.
Nick Harkaway was born in Cornwall in 1972. The author of four novels, The Gone-Away World, Angelmaker, Tigerman and Gnomon, he lives in London with his wife and two children.
