Author’s Club Lunch – The Wood That Built London

12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Join the Authors’ Club for this month’s lunch, which on this occasion will feature a talk from Chris Schüler on the subject of his fascinating work, The Wood That Built London (A human history of the Great North Wood).

For a millennium, these woods were intensively managed to provide timber for construction, furniture, tool-making and shipbuilding, and charcoal for London’s blacksmiths, kilns and bakeries. Now they afford green space for Londoners and a vital habitat for small mammals, birds and insects.

Drawing on a wealth of documents, historic maps and environmental evidence, this compelling narrative history charts the fortunes of the North Wood from the earliest times: its ecology, its ownership, its management, and its gradual encroachment by the metropolis
